MACHINE HEAD Frontman Slams 'Lulu': 'I F**king Can't Stand LOU REED' - June 26, 2012

In a brand new interview with Niclas Müller-Hansen of Sweden's Metalshrine, MACHINE HEAD guitarist/vocalist Robb Flynn was asked if he could ever see his band recording something totally different, like METALLICA did with its collaborative album with Lou Reed, "Lulu". "Well, the 'Lulu' thing sucks. It's fucking horrible." Flynn replied. When asked if he told the METALLICA members — and MACHINE HEAD's frequent touring mates — his opinion of the "Lulu" CD, Flynn replied, "They didn't ask and if they would've asked, I would've told them how I felt. I've said it in public already, so they know, because those dudes know what people are saying about METALLICA."

He continued, "I didn't even get it. If those guys need to do that stuff to get their ya-yas out, that's cool and I respect them, but eeehhh… was Lemmy not available? Was fucking Iggy Pop not available? [laughs] I think there are so many people that might've been a better choice. I don't know the dude [Lou Reed], but maybe he's the most charismatic guy in the world, I don't know.

"I fucking can't stand Lou Reed. I don't like his solo career and I don't like THE VELVET UNDERGROUND, so I don't know much about it other than 'Walk On The Wild Side'.

MACHINE HEAD Frontman Says 'Lulu' Is 'Horrible', 'Bizarre' And 'Fascinatingly Bad'

Total Guitar, which is said to be Europe's best-selling guitar magazine, recently conducted a "readers' questions" interview with MACHINE HEAD's Robb Flynn and Phil Demmel for the publication's March 2012 issue (issue 225). When asked by one reader if they heard METALLICA and Lou Reed's collaborative album, "Lulu", and what they honestly thought of it, Robb replied, "I think it's horrible. I don't get it. The METALLICA fan in me wants to think that there's this ulterior motive that none of us can see, and it's helping them branch out into something different. But I don't even get what's going on."

Added Phil: "I've heard, like, half of a tune. I don't like Lou Reed at all. I love METALLICA, but I don't like METALLICA with Lou Reed. It's not for me. I'll wait for the next METALLICA album."

Continued Robb: "It sounds like Grandpa Simpson rapping over fast thrash beats or something. We're huge fans of METALLICA and they'll always be my favorite band, but that record was bizarre. It was fascinatingly bad."

Metallica Admit 'Lulu' Failure

Metallica have acknowledged the critical reaction to "Lulu", but think it will eventually be recognised as a classic album.
But it leaves them cautious over their future projects, including their forthcoming 3D film which enters production this year.
Speaking on "Lulu" (via Blabbermouth), Lars Ulrich said their collaborator found the criticism hardest to deal with.

"It was difficult for Lou Reed because he takes everything very personally. And I think he was very surprised. We told him all along: 'Listen, there are some very, very, very hardcore metal fans out there that like everything pre-packaged in a particular little box that looks like this, and the minute that you slightly veer outside of that, then they have a hernia."

He says the band needed to experiment with Lou Reed to "shake up" their career to survive creatively.

"The LA Weekly said how the real album of 2011 was 'Lulu', but nobody is gonna recognize it for another 20 years," said Ulrich. "In about 900 years from now, people will be able to talk about 'Lulu' face to face with each other without hiding behind masks."

Ulrich went on to talk about the Metallica 3D movie, which they seem to be approaching with caution after the commercial failure of "Lulu".

"Getting your own 3D movie off the ground is easier said than done, but we're doing our best," he said. "We just want to make sure that we don't throw ourselves out into something that gets so completely overwhelming that the whole thing just blows up in our face."

The film will follow a story of the band members against the backdrop of a Metallica concert, and will enter production this year.

Ich finde das Video auch richtig gut! Habe nur eigentlich was anderes erwartet, mehr so ein Movie-Video. Aber Band-Aufnahme ist definitiv gelungen...
