Corrosion of Conformity (Hardcore/Southern Metal)

    Also meinungen.

:headbang:

Dave at the Milton Keyne's Bowl 93':

"For me today is a very historical day. 10 years of bullshit is over between Megadeth and Metallica."

  • james hört man bei "Man Or Ash"
Man, die Wiseblood will ich och, kommt mir als nächstes ins haus, Drowning in a Daydream kling wie wenn man Led Zeppelin das Equipment von Metallica in die Hande gedrückt hätte :D

  • wenn man noch irgendwo was downloaden könnte würd ichs mir runterholen so muss ich mir halt mal ne cd zulegen wo is das drauf mit james?

"Your friend is the one you call to bail you out of jail."

Your best friend is the one sitting next to you saying. "Dude, that was awesome!"

And forever after, you can hear the laughter
World's being plastered by an evil bastard
    Exterminating faster, devastating plaster
    Fabulous disaster

And forever after, you can hear the laughter
World's being plastered by an evil bastard
    Exterminating faster, devastating plaster
    Fabulous disaster

    Hier´n paar Anspieltipps:

    Von Blind:

    Dance Of The Dead
    Don´t Break The Circle
    Vote With A Bullet

    von Deliverance:

    Heaven´s Not Overflowing
    Albatros
    Shelter

    von Wiseblood:

    King Of The Rotten
    Wiseblood
    Drowning In A Daydream

    von America´s Volume Dealer

    Stare Too Long
    Diablo Blvd
    Sleeping Martyr

Corrosion of Conformity – In the Arms of God
    Review by John Pegoraro (StonerRock.com)
    Sanctuary Records
    Release date: April 5, 2005

When most groups say their next release is going to be “heavier” or “a return to our roots,” it winds up being code for “a lackluster and ultimately futile attempt to retain our dwindling fan base.” Corrosion of Conformity return after a four year hiatus with a rarity – an album that backs up the band’s claims.

Well, you won’t find a return to the hardcore style that dominated their early, pre-Pepper Keenan material, but what you get with In the Arms of God are twelve songs that merge the politically charged metal of 1991’s Blind with the southern Sabbath boogie of 1994’s Deliverance and 1996’s Wiseblood. All this without the glossy production that marred an otherwise solid America’s Volume Dealer.

It starts off innocuously enough, with the bluesy intro to “Stonebreaker,” and then the song kicks into the rhythmic crunch COC pretty much cornered the market on (think of Wiseblood’s “Goodbye Windows” or “Born Again for the Last Time”). The second track, “Paranoid Opioid,” will draw too many comparisons to Metallica’s “Dirty Window” (off the much-maligned St Anger), due to the striking similarities between both song’s main riffs. However, “Paranoid Opioid” has an intensity and a drive that “Dirty Window” lacks (oh, and solos, but that’s another discussion altogether). If anything, it’s more comparable to “Senor Limpio” from Deliverance.

Other notables on In the Arms of God are “It Is That Way,” “Dirty Hands, Empty Pockets,” and “Infinite War.” “It Is That Way” has changed since the version on last year’s High Volume compilation. The vocals are stronger, as is the overall flow of the song. It’s got a sleazy groove to it. The first half of “Dirty Hands, Empty Pockets,” is driven by a funky Mike Dean bass line, and then halfway through shifts gears and goes into a raucous boogie metal stomp, accented by solos from both Keenan and Woody Weatherman. It’s also a good example of new drummer Stanton Moore’s impressive skills. He plays with the rhythms and beats, often playing off time yet remaining on the beat. I thought it would’ve been impossible to replace former drummer Reed Mullin, but Moore does an impeccable job. With what I’m assuming is Dean on vocals (I’ve got a promo copy, so I can’t verify this), “Infinite War” almost hearkens back to pre-Blind times. The riff is very much like the driving songs on that album, though, especially with the Thin Lizzy dual leads.

Scattered amongst these heavy hitting tracks are more melodic songs that are descendants of “Drowning in a Daydream” and “13 Angels.” “So Much Left Behind” and “World on Fire” (originally a bonus track on AVD and re-recorded for this album) are the strongest of these. While they may not match the heaviness of the other songs, they’ve got catchy hooks that keep them memorable.

But none of the songs can match In the Arms of God’s highlight, the title track that closes out the album. After the morose, acoustic “Crown of Thorns,” COC launch into a seven minute masterpiece that’s best described as the angry bastard child of “Damned for All Time,” “Vote With a Bullet,” and “Fuel.” Like “Dirty Hands, Empty Pockets,” it’s a diatribe against the morally vacant political machinations that run the country. Keenan spits out “And you fall from the arms of God!” with the rage of someone who’s had enough of a corrupt system. The music matches his anger, building in intensity and ending the album with a jolt.

Is it a perfect album? Unfortunately not. There are a couple of songs that didn’t do much for me. But in spite of those instances, In the Arms of God is so far the best thing I’ve heard in 2005. Corrosion of Conformity’s latest lives up to the band’s impressive legacy and shows there’s still a fight left in them.
