"[Dio's] music is so much a part of what's in METALLICA's DNA, the harder, edgier, blues-based hard rock from the Seventies. It was fairly effortless to put this together, because it's something that we were all reared on. I don't recall sitting there in a band meeting or anything deciding what to play. Somebody starts playing 'Stargazer' — which is sort of just like something that's in our arsenal to jam — and then that whole period there, 'Tarot Woman', 'Kill The King', 'A Light In The Black' — that's just really effortless to jump into." - Lars Ulrich

  • METALLICA PRÄSENTIEREN NEUEN SONG ´THE LORDS OF SUMMER´ (LIVE) | 16.03.2014
    Datum: 16 Apr 2014, 11:10 pm - Author:

    -------

James Hetfield has admitted he’s already amassed “500 riffs” for the next record.

Metallica have already begun thinking about the follow up to 2008’s ‘Death Magnetic’. In an interview with MTV Brazil, James Hetfield revealed that writing would begin soon after the Death Magnetic tour winds up in the autumn.

“When we’re done touring, which will probably be in October or November, we’ll take a little time and then start writing”, said the frontman. “I’ve already got 500 riffs. It’s crazy. I’ve got a lot of ideas already".
“I play guitar a lot. I play guitar a lot when I’m not on tour. The last year I’ve fallen in love with playing”.

On the subject of the shrink Metallica employed during the making of 'St Anger', and as featured in the ‘Some Kind Of Monster’ movie, Hetfield said:
“We needed some help. He was a referee and he was able to let us say what we needed to say to each other in a safer environment. It definitely saved Metallica”.

  • METALLICA´S BEITRAG ZUM DIO TRIBUTE-ALBUM || 05.12.2012
    Datum: 10 Apr 2014, 3:56 pm - Author:

Wendy Dio, the widow and longtime manager of legendary heavy metal singer Ronnie James Dio (DIO, BLACK SABBATH, RAINBOW, HEAVEN & HELL), has revealed more information about the upcoming Dio tribute album, which is due next year. The collection, which will be released via Niji Entertainment Group, the label that was created by Ronnie and Wendy, will tentatively include contributions from METALLICA, JUDAS PRIEST's Rob Halford, MOTÖRHEAD's Lemmy Kilmister, DEEP PURPLE's Ian Gillan, Alice Cooper, Glenn Hughes (DEEP PURPLE, BLACK SABBATH), Sebastian Bach (SKID ROW) and Dave Grohl (NIRVANA, FOO FIGHTERS). The CD will reportedly see Grohl covering BLACK SABBATH's "The Mob Rules", Halford contributing a version of RAINBOW's "Long Live Rock 'N' Roll" and Hughes offering up his rendition of RAINBOW's "Catch The Rainbow".

Speaking to Eric Blair of "The Blairing Out With Eric Blair Show" at this past Saturday's (December 1) Icons & Idols-Rock 'N' Roll Auction at Julien's Auctions in Beverly Hills, California, Wendy said, "We have a lot of [artists] who are working on [their contributions to the tribute album]. METALLICA has already finished theirs for us and ANTHRAX and Glenn Hughes [have completed theirs as well]. Rob Halford's working on it. I think Alice Cooper's working on it. MOTÖRHEAD, [in] January we'll get theirs. So we'll have a whole classic CD ready next year, and so I'm hoping to then ask the younger bands to do a tribute to Ronnie as well, so we can do two CDs: a classic one and the younger bands."

Asked if she had any younger bands in mind for the tribute album, Wendy said, "I haven't approached anyone, but who I would pick would definitely be KORN, AVENGED SEVENFOLD… Anyone that's been influenced by Ronnie or Ronnie's music, and I think it would be a great tribute and it would be great fun to do, too."

According to Wendy, she left it up to each artist to choose which song to cover and didn't get involved in the creative process. "They could pick anything from ELF, DIO, RAINBOW, SABBATH… whichever songs they wanted to do," she said. "With Ronnie and I, we worked together as a team; he always was the creative one and I was at the business side. I never interfered with his music and he never interfered with my business, and I think if you give the person the creativity, that's what they are — they create. Let them create which song they'd like to create."

Wendy also spoke to some of the tracks that have already been completed for the Dio tribute album, calling Glenn's version of "Catch The Rainbow" "amazing," saying that "it absolutely brought so many tears to my eyes." She also described ANTHRAX's rendition of "Neon Knights" as "fantastic," but remained mum on METALLICA's contribution, saying, "I'm not gonna tell you what that is. It's gonna be surprise. It's a medley, and it's gonna be a surprise."

Why There Will Never Be Another Metal Band as Big as Metallica
    Thursday, March 20th, 2014 at 12:00PM

    By Vince Neilstein

Time and time again I hear people in the metal industry wonder aloud who “the next Metallica” will be. Always Metallica, never any other band. I’ve heard managers say this, I’ve heard agents say it, label staff, publicists, everyone. Even guys in bands. It comes up all the time in casual conversation.

“Who’s the next big band that’s gonna break?”
“Just waiting for something to pop.”
“Is it gonna be <insert name of reasonably popular metal band here>?”

It’s understandable why those in the industry want there to be another massively popular metal band. When metal reaches the mainstream,it creates an entire economic ecosystem underneath it, both in the near term and long term. Short term: when Metallica tours, all sorts of people outside the band members themselves make money, from the managers and agents to the stage hands, techs, merch companies, show promoters, publicists, blogs like this one (via advertising) and on and on, right down to the friggin’ beer vendors and parking attendants at Corp-U-Sign Arena. Long term: Metallica’s popularity brings in new fans to the genre. Sure, some people just got into Metallica and their dalliance in heavy music stopped there. But thousands upon thousands kept going, diving deeper and deeper into metal and spending tons of money on it along the way. The fans benefit too: more money in the pot means more investment will be made into bringing new, young acts along. Everyone stands to benefit.

Well, I hate to break it to you guys. There is never going to be another metal band as big as Metallica. Not even close.
    Here’s why:

    1. There are too many bands.
There are too many metal bands out there, plain and simple, pulling metal fans in a million directions at once. The days of the universally loved metal band are gone (except for Agalloch). It’s not a bad thing that there are so many bands… not at all. In fact, it’s wonderful: never has metal been more diverse and artistically rich than right now. But the fact that there are so many bands — and choices — means that every metal fan has a lot more options when it comes to selecting their favorite one, or favorite few, to pay attention to and to spend money on. This behavior, of course, is enabled by…

    2. The Internet.
This one is two-fold. Yes, file-sharing has made it harder for musicians to make a living, that’s obvious. But in this context I bring up the Internet as the ultimate narrowcast experience: any music fan can find a band that’s suited EXACTLY to their tastes. No longer are music fans beholden to the broadcast experience — being given a limited menu at the record store or on the radio and being forced to choose their favorite. Whatever you want, it’s out there. Spazz-crunk-techno-core? There’s a band for that. Space-fusion-post-pop? You betcha. There are no common denominators anymore simply because we don’t need them to find music we like. Think of music on the Internet like a giant dating site: if your fetish is Asian girls with big boobs, blond hair and shaved hoo-has, all you really have to do is click a few check-boxes and you’re on your way to getting laid tonight.

    3. Rock radio won’t support metal.
The rock radio format, against all odds and common sense, has not changed one iota in the past 15 years. I’ve spent plenty of time talking about this subject in the past so I won’t harp on it here. But if there’s going to be a metal band that hits the mainstream it seems pretty damn important that radio — the ultimate broadcast medium that big fat dumb America listens to in their soul-sucking cars — gets on board. Unfortunately, rock radio in 2014 won’t take any chances whatsoever. Oh, I know, Sirius Liquid Metal plays metal, but it’s a pay service and it just doesn’t cast a wide enough net; it’s too specialized, and it’s even billed that way. For a metal band to hit the mainstream they have to be played on mainstream radio… crossover, as they say. This is becoming increasingly difficult because…

    4. Screaming.
Screamed and growled vocals have gained some acceptance outside of the metal world (see: indie rock kids getting into metal in recent years by way of Pitchfork, Stereogum, NPR, etc.), but the world at large is just not having it. The general music-listening populace likes melody in singing, and they like to be able to understand lyrics. Bands like All That Remains, Avenged Sevenfold and Five Finger Death Punch that have gotten some radio play have either had to transition to only clean singing or were mostly that way to begin with. Hard though it is to believe for us — people who listen to much more extreme music every day — those bands are considered pretty abrasive to a lot of listeners.
OK, fine, those bands never had much metal cred to begin with the way Metallica did in the ’80s, so let’s kick it up a notch on the extremity meter: bands like Mastodon and Killswitch Engage were able to expand their fanbases by incorporating more clean singing and melodic, pop-driven song structures into their music. Lamb of God are the lone exception; miraculously they’ve never sung a clean note. But, love all those bands as I do, I don’t see any of them going beyond playing 3,000-5,000 seat venues on standard tours (festivals don’t count). That’s hella impressive, and it’s a great way to make a living, but those numbers don’t even approach Metallica numbers.
And still, many people consider Lamb of God to be tame these days by modern metal standards. When we talk about “metal” we’re talking about stuff that’s even heavier in every sense, not just the vocals. And mainstream culture is never gonna get into that shit.

    5. Music doesn’t matter as much as it used to.
I’m sorry guys, it’s just the world we live in. It doesn’t. “Kids these days” have a million other ways to spend their time: Facebook, Instagram, video games, sex, drugs, etc. And, to be honest, it’s not just “kids” (I hate that expression when used by industry folk): it’s you and me, too. When was the last time you sat in front of your stereo (if you even have a proper one not in your car!) and listened to an album start to finish? Be honest. That time when you passed out to Dark Side of the Moon after your BBQ doesn’t count. Music has been relegated to background status now for all but a select few die-hards. It is no longer the main activity.

So, with apologies, that’s reality: there is never going to be another metal band as big as or even close to as big as Metallica. The way it is now is the way it’s going to be for a while, probably forever, if it even stays this good. Stop hoping, and make the most of what we have right here, right now, which is pretty fucking great if you ask me. The metal scene is better than healthy… it’s thriving. Let’s keep it going.

  • 3D-FILM "METALLICA-THROUGH THE NEVER" STARTET AM 9. AUGUST || 15.01.12
    Datum: 2 Mar 2014, 10:20 am - Author:

    M3D

    January 15, 2013

We're back with an update on that little project we told you about last year... the Metallica 3D movie filmed in Vancouver in August of 2012. Some of you were kind enough to be a huge part of our three nights of filming and may be wondering just what the heck has been happening since then. Throughout the Fall and
first part of this year, we've been working with director Nimrod Antal and a team of editors to pull all the pieces together and so we are beyond excited to now actually have a release date and a title...
drum-roll please, "Metallica Through The Never" coming to theatres on August 9!

We're also proud to announce that we will be teaming up with independent film marketing and distribution company Picturehouse to help us spread the love in theatres. Like your friends in 'Tallica, Picturehouse is truly independent, take big chances and often think outside of the box. Founder Bob Berney has overseen the releases of two of the most successful independent films ever, "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" and "The Passion of the Christ," as well as many other cutting edge, critically acclaimed and award winning films.

It goes without saying that we are really just getting rolling here and will have many more updates for you. And of course, we can't wait for you to see the film!!

PICTUREHOUSE REOPENS ITS DOORS WITH FOUNDER BOB BERNEY AT THE HELM

Theatrical Distributor's First New Release Will Be the Highly Anticipated Feature Film Metallica Through The Never

Company has Signed Multi-Year Output Deal with Netflix

January 15, 2013, New York City — Picturehouse, the full-service independent film marketing and distribution company started in 2005, is reopening its doors with founder Bob Berney at the helm. Berney will serve as CEO and Jeanne Berney will serve as President of the relaunched company, which will continue to be based in New York.

"We are absolutely thrilled to be back in business under the Picturehouse banner," said Mr. Berney, who recently acquired the trademark and logo from Warner Bros. "We worked very hard to build it into a brand known for acquiring exciting, challenging and entertaining films from the U.S. and around the world, and helping them find their audiences."

Picturehouse's first new release will be Metallica Through The Never a feature film starring members of the iconic rock band and Dane DeHaan (Chronicle, The Amazing Spider-Man 2). DeHaan plays a young band crew member who is sent out on an urgent mission while the band is playing a rousing live set in front of a sold-out crowd and unexpectedly finds his world turned completely upside down. The film, written and directed by Nimród Antal (Kontroll, Predators), is due in theaters August 9. One of the bestselling rock acts of all time, Metallica has sold over 105 million albums worldwide.

"Nim and the band have made a film that really captures the spirit of Metallica and their millions of loyal fans," said Mr. Berney. "It's an entertaining genre film with a concert inside it, a fun ride featuring an exciting young actor, Dane DeHaan. It's a very cool project to reboot Picturehouse with."

Added Metallica drummer and founding member Lars Ulrich: "Metallica's way of doing things is to jump into unexplored creative endeavors with no safety net whatsoever. Putting this movie together for the last couple of years has been a pretty wild ride, and we've definitely done our share of flying without a net! Bringing Bob and Jeanne and the new Picturehouse team in at this point provides us with a much needed level of security for the distribution of the film. Their spirit of independence and desire to work outside the box is something we can relate to in every way, and this makes them both a welcome addition and a
natural fit in the Metallica family."

Picturehouse will acquire, market and theatrically distribute independent films from the U.S. and around the world. The company expects to release two or three films this year, increasing its output to four or five in 2014 and six or seven in subsequent years.

The company recently signed an exclusive, multi-year output deal with Netflix, the world's leading Internet television network. Picturehouse films will come to Netflix exclusively in the United States shortly after theatrical release.

"Bob and Jeanne are legendary tastemakers and innovators who were early partners with Netflix in bringing amazing movies like Pan's Labyrinth and La Vie en Rose to our service," said Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos. "Netflix members love independent films and the Berneys have indisputably great taste."

In addition, Picturehouse has secured a first look relationship with Warner Bros. Pictures International for films to which it has international distribution rights.

Mr. Berney headed the company when it was originally formed in April 2005 as a joint venture between HBO and New Line Cinema. Under his leadership, Picturehouse acquired and released such acclaimed features as Guillermo del Toro's Pan's Labyrinth (winner of three Academy Awards®); Olivier Dahan's La Vie en Rose (winner of two Academy Awards, including best actress for Marion Cotillard); Sergei Bodrov's Mongol; Patricia Rozema's Kit Kittredge: An American Girl; Robert Altman's A Prairie Home Companion; and Seth Gordon's documentary The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters. When Time Warner folded the operations of New Line and Picturehouse into the Warner Bros. family, the brand continued to live on through the home entertainment and television releases of the films.

Mr. Berney, who has founded and operated some of the most successful independent film distribution and marketing companies of the last decade, has overseen the U.S. theatrical releases of blockbusters such as My Big Fat Greek Wedding and The Passion of the Christ as well as critically hailed films including Christopher Nolan's Memento, Alfonso Cuaron's Y Tu Mamá También and Niki Caro's Whale Rider.

Most recently, Mr. Berney co-founded and served as President, Theatrical Distribution of FilmDistrict, a multi-faceted acquisition, distribution, production and financing company, whose initial releases, Insidious, Soul Surfer, Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark and Drive, grossed over $150 million in domestic box office. Previously, as CEO of Apparition, Berney presided over the release of Bright Star, Boondock Saints 2: All Saints Day, The Young Victoria and The Runaways.

Mr. Berney also served as President and Partner at Newmarket Films, releasing numerous features including Mel Gibson's $370 million-grossing The Passion of the Christ; Monster, for which Charlize Theron won the Best Actress Academy Award; and Whale Rider, a breakthrough family film that also received a Best Actress nomination. Newmarket sold its distribution operation to Time Warner as part of the formation of Picturehouse. Before that, Berney ran IFC Films, where he acquired and oversaw the release of films including the $240-million surprise hit My Big Fat Greek Wedding and Y Tu Mamá También.

Entertainment marketing veteran Jeanne Berney most recently served as Executive Vice President of Marketing at FilmDistrict. Before that, she was Executive Vice President of Marketing and Administration for Apparition.

Ms. Berney also served as Director of Public Relations and Marketing at the Film Society of Lincoln Center, where she was responsible for the campaigns for all of the Society's year-round programs. Previously, Ms. Berney ran the Film and Digital Entertainment Group at Rogers & Cowan and held publicity and promotion positions at Rysher Entertainment, Savoy Pictures and Miramax Films.
